Frequently Asked Questions

I've lost my subscription code! What do I do?

Don't panic! You can get it emailed to you again here.

When I right-click on a file and use "Send To > Mail Recipient", it doesn't use Affixa

You need to check two things:

  • That Affixa is the default mail application on your computer. To do this, go to the Affixa Options screen and choose the "Computer & Internet" tab. If this contains red text, Affixa isn't your computer's current default mail application. Click the "Make Default" button to fix this.
  • If Affixa is your computer's default mail application but you still have problems, you need to check your "Send To > Mail Recipient" option hasn't been hijacked by another application:
  • Download and unzip this file to your computer.
  • Go to the folder where you unzipped the file. You should notice that the file has an icon like an envelope.
  • Drag a file you'd like to attach to an email on top of the "Mail Recipient" file's envelope icon.
  • If it opens in Affixa, this confirms that your "Send To > Mail Recipient" option has been hijacked.
  • If confirmed, go to Windows Explorer and type shell:sendto in the address bar.
  • Delete any existing "Mail Recipient" files.
  • Move the file you downloaded into this folder.

The email options in Office are disabled. Why?

It would seem that if you don't have Outlook installed, these options are disabled ordinarily. Some of our users have found a workaround though!

Is there an MSI installer available for network deployments?

There certainly is. For more information, please read our deployment guide which details the steps required to deploy Affixa using Group Policy or within a Terminal Services / Citrix environment. You can download the "Configuration for Business Environments" document from here.

Affixa contains its own MSI Solution Generator, allowing you to preconfigure Affixa for your users and deploy the software & configuration with ease.

What limitations does Affixa have?

Due to some historical issues with Microsoft's mechanism for sending emails, you might run into a few problems sending a file attachment whose filename is in a different alphabet to the one you use normally (e.g. your computer uses English but you're sending a Russian attachment), but this won't affect 99.9% of people!

Gmail does not allow you to send more than 25MB of files, encrypted Zip files, or even Zip files containing applications (.exe files). Affixa will not circumnavigate these restrictions.

Yahoo! Mail does not allow you to send more than 10MB of files (20MB for a paid account). This software will not work with Yahoo! Mail Classic.

If I use Affixa to log into my email account, how come my web browser can log in automatically afterwards?

If you allow Affixa to log into your email account for you and choose to launch your web browser after uploading your attachments, Affixa will store any new cookies it acquires in your browser's cookie repository before launching your browser. These cookies are in a "logged on" state. Your web browser will use these cookies when connecting to the email server, hence why you're not asked for your username or password.

What's the Firefox Extension all about?

Firefox keeps its cookies in a mini database that Affixa can't ordinarily access while Firefox is running. Affixa needs to pass on some cookies to Firefox so you can be taken straight to your new draft message without logging in.

The Affixa Login Handler Extension introduces a new protocol to Firefox: "Refresh Cookies Before Navigating". If Firefox receives a URL with rcbn:// at the beginning, it forces Firefox to load Affixa's cookies and then navigate to the web site in question.

I'm having trouble uninstalling and get a message about a missing "unins000.msg" file. What do I do?

It seems there was an issue with the uninstaller during August 2009 which meant only some files were removed. When those that remained were run, problems arose.

If you want to ensure you have a fully working version of Affixa, please download the latest version. Simply install this version over your existing version.

If you would simply like to ensure Affixa is fully removed from your system, download the latest version, install it over the existing version and then uninstall straight away afterwards. Installing the new version will replace the faulty uninstaller with a new one that should work smoothly.

We're sorry for the inconvenience that this caused!

How do I go directly to my draft message (instead of the drafts folder) using Zimbra?

You will need to install this Zimlet. For more instructions on installing Zimlets, please see http://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Working_with_Zimlets.

Many thanks to Dennis Plöger for writing this Zimlet!

Where has the option to log in via your web browser gone?

Unfortunately this is no longer possible because of security improvements in more recent browsers. It is no longer possible for Affixa to pick up the cookies it needs from your browser to log in and create your draft message.
